VIDEO: Muslim Prisoner Project: Elijah
This is another short research reel for the currently untitled project I am working on about Muslims in the US prison system.
I met Elijah while he was in prison through his chaplain in South Dakota. The chaplain had found my email address on the website of a Muslim student organization website and he decided to contact me for religious material. Since, there was no Muslim chaplain at the facility he was looking for books and materials he could share and asked if I could correspond with particular inmate who was the elected religious leader on the inside.
This footage is from my first visit with Elijah last year in April.

Dear Blogger,
I appreciate your effort for creating this blog. This blog will help some way, for some, one day. Keep doing the work for the peace and harmony of our universe. Our life is very short to do everything we want to do. So only do things that others like. Do not give pain to anybody.
Anyway, thanks a lot. God Bless you!!!
Thanks Shaji
Much love.
Salaam,
Thanks for sharing this Justin. I actually have heard that same thing working at IMAN, from our community dialogues: how much more brotherhood is shown “inside” and how cold and self-concerned it seems many are in the “outside” world. We must remember “neighborly needs” as our brothers and sisters have rights over us.
Masha’Allah his recitation was very lovely and was a nice treat.
The last few notes of his letter were great reminder for myself : “..where there is even one there is actually two, meaning that even if you are alone, Allah is always with you…” I needed to hear that.
Thanks Justin, keep up the good work and keep’em coming!
Your sis in Islam, Ndidi
wasalaam, Thanks Ndidi. I think IMAN does great work within the ex offender community. The Project Restore brothers are also subjects in my film.
I hope to see all prisoners find faith. It helped me more than you can imagine.
Woah nelly, how about them appels!
Great ! like always Justin Jaan
